Cha Jong-Rye works with wood, composing variations on its original form by meticulously chipping and sanding its pieces into new creations, and in so doing, maximizing the natural energy and beauty of the material. This virtual exhibition comprises the series ‘Expose exposed,’ which the artist has been working on for years. ‘Expose exposed’ refers to both the active and the passive form of the verb “to expose,” revealing a dichotomy that embodies the artist’s underlying philosophy. For Cha, the meaning of an artwork emerges vis-a-vis exchanges between the 'desire of the creator,' who always seeks to express something, and the 'desire of the viewers,' who want to find images by themselves. The active and passive desires of both parties are in constant conflict and connection with each other.
