Hyung Kyung Bae has been addressing the human body in her artwork for thirty years. She is constantly in search of the essence of objects; as such, her works are not simply formative sculptures but manifestations of her ongoing contemplation and reasoning regarding the existence of human beings. Her works of the past ten years in particular have focused on her reasoning about human beings through formative factors. The exhibitions “Born, Live and Die” (Hakgojae Gallery, 2004), “Thinking, Talking” (Kim Chong Yung Museum, 2010), and “The Revelation” (Space K, 2012) all clearly show what Hyung Kyung Bae thinks about the relations among sculpture, humans, and reasoning. This exhibition, “The Sculpture of Hyung Kyung Bae”: Humans and Thinking,” explores an alternative way of thinking about humans by posing questions concerning formative art about humans (through installation sculptures) as well as forms of the human body themselves. Bae deals with existential reasoning of human beings through the human body, which embody the relations with all things of the world. Relations of the part and the whole, as well as the resulting atmosphere of the space, are important points of this exhibition. Sculptures of the human body constitute a mass of reasoning that invokes artistic relations within the exhibition space. Holding this exhibition in an online virtual gallery serves as another space for viewers to search for the intrinsic values of life by shedding light on the world of reasoning about the existence of human beings. All of us living in modern society feel threatened by the internet, even though it enables us to easily obtain valuable information. It has wrought enormous change to our way of life; in the past, so much more effort was required in order for us to realize happiness, but we should not lose sight of the fact that we must nevertheless patiently strive to understand happiness and the meaning of life. In that spirit, this exhibition intends to reveal answers to questions about the essence of man by establishing relations with art in a virtual space.
