Although the photos in Jeong-Lok Lee's new series ‘Decording Scape’ are extensions of his previous work?they depict nature and the environment and show the power and wonder of the earth with minimum alteration by the photographer?he has added a new 'verbal' concept in order to visualize the mythical and spiritual world which is deeply involved in our lives more colorfully and intensely, along with his own philosophy. Lee considers words and language to be much more than simple means of communication. Instead, he sees language as 'a house of existence' through which objects reveal their true nature, rather than a mere signifying system devised and upheld by people. In his photos, the consonants and vowels we pronounce to form language are uniquely combined as if mythical living things, and comprise one single landscape together with other images that coexist in his photo frame. By reading the phonetic alphabet Hangeul as an ideographic alphabet and observing Hangeul as a pictogram, Lee has attempted to explore the meaning of nature and communication with nature; he both observes nature and sympathizes with nature. As a result, he uncovers the verbal essence of nature, visualized using Hangeul signs in ‘Decoding Scape.’
