The world has become overcome with apprehension due to a series of recent terrorist attacks. Artist Seung Young Kim, a first session member of the Korean Artist Project, also known as KAP, created his new work 'Hurt', to put into question of what true peace is. The work, “Hurt,” consists of around 7,000 pieces of arranged compasses on a floor, with some portions of the compasses flipped to reveal the word ‘Hurt’. If one looks closely at the compasses, all of their needles are pointing in random directions, rather than pointing north. One interesting detail is that the compasses are not broken, nor is any device added to disturb the magnetic field.

The artist Seung Young Kim commented, “Selfishness in a human being only pursues one’s interests, which causes boundaries, resentment, and faltering. I wondered when we could be freed from the boundaries of my ideas or your ideas, and that became the starting point of the compass work.”
He continued by saying, “After arranging thousands of compasses, the needles ended up pointing in random directions instead of facing north. They do not accept each other and insist on facing different directions from one another. They will get hurt, since they are directed at different points than each other.” This is the behind-the-scenes story of his work that he described.

This work is an extension of the work 'Peace', exhibited in 2007, and is talking about different means of achieving and defending peace, as well as hurt and conflict caused by these differences.

Meanwhile, the artist has also been expressing issues of communication, memories, and worries inside a human being through various media including painting, sound, and installation art for the last three decades.
