Seung-soon Park (1954~) is an artist who uses lines and spatial planes to depict cities and the people who live in them. This month’s newsletter introduces Seung-soon Park’s work “Episode 14-10”.

This work was first exhibited in the solo exhibition at Gallery IHN (July 3, 2014 ~ July 19, 2014). At that time, it was analyzed as being much brighter and more cheerful than her previous work. The artist painted a part of the large canvas in planes of blue, brown, and pink: pink was not used in her previous work, and inserted lines between the planes.

The artist explained, “The colored planes, consisting of sharp, simple lines, represent the buildings viewed horizontally, and the natural lines between them are the movements of natural objects, including humans, watched from above the buildings. This work combines two viewpoints: one is the viewpoint looking at the buildings horizontally and the other is the viewpoint looking down on the roofs of the buildings.”

“I tried to enlarge the margins intentionally. It might seem like nothing is painted on the margins through the photographs. But, in reality, it is painted 20 ~ 30 times with acrylic paint, so that it is as smooth and white as marble. The large white margins represent the great whole world. Buildings, people, and natural objects belong to the large world. The work was created around the dream that those buildings can move as our minds and eventually our society moves, so the work is like a picture diary of my hopes,” the artist continued.

The artist continually tells us stories about cities and space. If there is a difference between her previous work and her current work, it is the technique used to express the subjects. “At first I only used flat canvases, but now I also work with panel-type oval canvases. Materials and methods of applying color to my work have changed gradually with the use of objects, expressing three-dimensional aspects. But I keep the canvas as the foundational material for my work. When exhibiting my work, I display my three-dimensional and my two-dimensional work in such a way that they can collaborate in the exhibition space,” the artist added.

Artist Seung-soon Park has been busy preparing for exhibitions, starting with Art Busan, held on June 2nd. Because the schedules for the planned exhibitions were either delayed or advanced, the artist happens to open her exhibitions almost simultaneously. Because of that, she said it feels like she became a master. She can introduce her new work in each exhibition, despite the fact that her exhibitions are held at the same time, and it proves that she has created work in earnest.
At ART BUSAN, held in BEXCO, Busan on June 2, she exhibited two pieces, including "Episode 11", which she collaborated on with Galerie Bruno Massa in France. Then, on June 16, her solo exhibition (June 16 ~ July 10) will be held at Um Museum and at Dongtan Art Space in Dongtan Multi Culture Center. Of the works of Seung-soon Park being displayed, her installations will be shown at Um Museum, and her paintings will be exhibited at Dongtan Art Space.

The artist is also participating in《Miss G Collection. Art & Life Style Project》, the mixed genre exhibition between fashion, furniture, and fine art, at the main shop of Miss G Collection, for a month (June 15th ~ July 14). The exhibition will also feature furniture from a Danish furniture designer Finn Juhl (1913 - 1989) and garment from a fashion designer Chun-hee Ji. In this exhibition, a garment by Chun-hee Ji, inspired by an oil painting by artist Seung-soon Park, will be displayed for viewers to enjoy besides the painting that it is based on.
