Artist JongRye Cha, who is well known for creating conical shapes by shaping wood, is showing her new work, “Expose exposed 160815,” that is completely different from her earlier work. The work consists of stainless steel instead of wood and is made up of round shapes. Its new style almost made me think that the work was from a different artist.

The artist created the work in order to exhibit it at the 2016 Invitational Exhibition Modern Korea Sculpture, which was held in Chuncheon MBC this past October. Artist JongRye Cha said that the work was created after considering what kind of art would not be damaged by rain or wind, since the exhibition will be held outside.

In terms of its shape, the work is also greatly different from her previous work. Artist JongRye Cha explained, “This year, I did not anticipate certain results while working and, instead, focused on experimentation. I have been creating work for about twenty years and my work has continuously changed little by little. Sharp cones became rounder, and three-dimensional shapes changed into flat surfaces naturally as time went by. I felt I actively needed to change my work this year and have been experimenting with it.”

Atist JongRye Cha continues to do various experiments in her work. Her recent work, ‘Blooming,’ is one example.

Artist JongRye Cha had been creating sharply pointed work for a long time. She thought that the pointed conical forms could penetrate horizontality and explained how these forms, among all the things that exist on Earth, are located at the top. Mt. Everest, city skyscrapers that almost reach the sky, and sprouts coming out of the ground, are some examples. She also commented that the cluster of conical shapes expresses a certain kind of energy, and that each shape does not mean much individually.

Furthermore, these sculptural shapes, whether they are cones or spheres or wavy forms, had become meaningless over time. With that idea, the sharp three-dimensional shapes changed into flat surfaces and then became spherical forms.

Made accordingly, the work can be seen as an image of a galaxy or of schools of fish. The title of the work ‘Expose Exposed’ contains both a passive and an active meaning. The title indicates that the meaning of the work is being exposed in the process of creating it, and that viewers can expose it by adding meaning. The combination of both activities reveals the work as a whole.

Artist JongRye Cha commented by saying, “I explained my ideas about my work in detail to viewers early in my career, but I gradually came to enjoy listening to viewers’ various interpretations. I hope viewers view my work with their imagination, regardless of my will in creating it.”

In the meantime, the artist is preparing for a group exhibition at KIM CHONG YUNG MUSEUM in January of next year and stated that she wants to exhibit her work about three years from now, after spending a year or so conducting various experiments.
