These days, mountains and fields are crowded with people who travel around to enjoy the fall leaves. The front-page artwork of the Korean Artist Project newsletter this October is ‘Going out’, created in 2014 by artist Geun-Taek Yoo, in order to appreciate the autumn colors.

‘Going out’ is artwork that captures the fall landscape from the passageway of the apartment that the artist lived in. The artist explained, “I lived in an apartment, which had long passageways. Whenever I would go out, I faced the landscape that I was used to. I sometimes saw the landscape with a very strange feeling and I wanted to express that feeling through my work. When I saw leaves glint in autumn sun, the leaves were very beautiful and that gave me a kind of sadness. The hallway had the opposite impression from the glorious landscape. Just like the vanishing point of a painting, the cold passageway went far back and disappeared at the end. I wanted to drastically contrast the passageway and the landscape, in order to express them as strange spaces.”

Artist Geun-Taek Yoo’s work begins with ordinary spaces; his apartment, passageways, rooms, and a study; and from trivial things, like scenes from tourist sites and things that anybody might have experienced. The artist skillfully adds his imagination to extremely ordinary landscapes and creates his own odd atmosphere. His work starts with his own emotions and that distinguishes his work from existing Oriental painting. However, his work not only talks about his private life. The artist believes that his work connects to society, the world, and history as he expands the story of ‘himself.’

These days, the artist is having an invitational exhibition, called ‘The Whole Gravity of Painting, Summoned’, also considered a large-scale retrospective,at the museum of Tama Art University, one of Japan’s prestigious art universities. The exhibition will continue until December 4th, and show his oeuvre: from the series ‘The Scenery Outside Window’ from 1999 to his latest work. The artist Geun-Taek Yoo’s oeuvre is being displayed in a scenic panorama view. His work has been well-received in the local art scenes, since it succeeds the tradition of literary painting, and contains the experimental characteristics of contemporary art.
Meanwhile, the artist is currently continuing to experiment with materials and will hold a large-scale private exhibition at Gallery Hyundai next May.
